Once upon a time, in a small village deep in the heart of England, there was a naughty little boy named Tom. Tom was full of energy and always up to some sort of mischief. His favorite pastime was to explore the local pub, where he could watch the adults drink and talk, and occasionally steal a glance at the beautiful women who came to have a drink.
One day, Tom found an old, ratty-looking tie that belonged to his father. The tie was a remnant of his father’s long-ago days as a young gentleman, and Tom immediately saw its potential for some good fun. He decided to wear it to school the next day, and show all his friends how cool it was to be a little bit older and wiser than they were.
The next morning, Tom woke up early and sneaked into his father’s wardrobe. He carefully selected the oldest, rattiest-looking tie he could find, and tied it around his neck. He then ran downstairs to the kitchen, where his mother was making breakfast.
“Tom, you look absolutely ridiculous!” said his mother, laughing. “What are you doing with that old tie on?”
“I’m going to school,” said Tom, “and I want to show my friends how cool it is to be a bit older and wiser than them.”
“Well, I don’t know about that,” said his mother, “but at least you’re being a bit more creative than usual. Here, let me fix that tie for you before you go.”
Tom’s mother fixed the tie for him, and Tom set off for school with his newfound sense of maturity and wisdom. He walked through the village, feeling taller and more important than usual. The children at school were all looking at him funny, and Tom felt a little bit embarrassed, but he also knew that they were all jealous of his newfound “coolness”.
As the day went on, Tom felt increasingly uncomfortable with his tie. It was itchy and uncomfortable to wear, and Tom knew that he would never be able to wear it again after today. But he also knew that he had made a mistake in taking it in the first place, and he should have left it alone like he always does with things that don’t belong to him.
As Tom walked back home from school that day, he could feel the tie getting tighter and tighter around his neck. He knew that he needed to find someone to help him take it off before it became too late. But who would help him? Tom knew that no one would want to touch that nasty old tie except for maybe his father or grandfather...and they were both at work today!
Tom felt like he was going to suffocate from the tie around his neck. He ran into the house and tried to find someone who could help him take it off. His mother was in the kitchen making dinner, and when she saw Tom running in with his face red and the tie around his neck getting tighter and tighter, she immediately knew what had happened.
“Tom! What have you done?!” said his mother, grabbing a pair of scissors from the drawer and rushing over to him. She quickly cut the tie loose from around his neck, and Tom felt a surge of relief wash over him as the pressure on his neck disappeared.
“Tom,” said his mother, “you know that you’re not supposed to touch things that don’t belong to you. Especially not something like that old tie!”
“I know,” said Tom, tears streaming down his face. “I was just trying to be like my friends at school...but I didn’t know it would be so uncomfortable.”
“Well,” said his mother, “it looks like you’ve learned your lesson for today. Let’s go get some ice cream to celebrate!”
Tom and his mother walked out of the house hand-in-hand, and as they walked through the village towards the ice cream shop, Tom felt a little bit embarrassed but also a little bit proud of himself for taking a risk like that. He knew that he had learned a valuable lesson about not touching things that didn’t belong to him, and he resolved to be more careful in the future so that nothing like this would ever happen again.
