“Let’s face it, I’m not a morning person,” said Emma, as she stumbled through the house, half-asleep. “And I’m definitely not a fashion person either. The idea of getting dressed up and wearing something other than my favorite pair of jeans and a T-shirt makes me feel like I’m in elementary school all over again.”
Emma’s friends, Andrew and Lily, were laughing at her. “You know,” said Andrew, “there are some days when I feel like I’m in elementary school all over again too. But that’s when I call on my friends for help with my wardrobe.”
“Yeah,” said Lily, “we can help you with that. But first, we have a challenge for you. It’s a tie-tying challenge.”
“What is that?” said Emma, feeling a little bit skeptical.
“Well,” said Andrew, “it’s when you have to tie a tie without any help from us. We’ll give you some tips and tricks, but it’s all up to you from there on out.”
“OK,” said Emma, “let’s do it. I’m game.”
So began the tie-tying challenge. Andrew and Lily gave Emma some basic instructions: how to hold the tie, how to make the first loop, and how to tighten it up. Then they left her to her own devices.
“OK,” said Emma, looking at the tie in her hand, “this is going to be easy. I mean, how hard can it be to tie a tie?”
She started to tie the tie, but it immediately became apparent that she was in for a challenge. The tie was slipping through her fingers, and she could not seem to get the loops right. She tried to follow the instructions that Andrew and Lily had given her, but it was all so confusing.
“OK,” said Emma, feeling a little bit frustrated, “I get it now. This is harder than it looks.”
But she didn’t give up. She took a deep breath and started again. She concentrated on the instructions and managed to get the first loop done correctly. Then she tightened it up and gave herself a little pat on the back.
“Not bad,” she said to herself, “not bad at all.”
She looked at the tie and realized that she had done it! She had tied her own tie without any help from anyone else! She felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over her, and she knew that she could do anything she put her mind to.
“OK,” said Emma, taking another deep breath, “let’s face the next challenge – getting dressed up for a party!”
She looked at her wardrobe and realized that she had plenty of choices. She could wear that cute little black dress that she had been eyeing for weeks, or maybe even that pair of jeans and a T-shirt that she always wore. But no matter what she decided to wear, she knew that she would be ready for anything that came her way.
So began Emma’s journey into fashion and self-confidence. She learned to tie her own ties, and she also learned that she could do anything else she put her mind to as well. She felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over her every time she faced a new challenge and conquered it on her own. And she knew that with every new day, there was always another challenge waiting for her to face it head-on and show the world what she was made of.
